What is Bowen Therapy? The Bowen technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy, named after its innovator the late Mr.Tom Bowen (1916 -1982) of Geelong in Victoria. The technique involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs to move over muscle, ligament tendon and fascia in various parts of the body. The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure. During the session the client will lie on the therapy table, although the work can also be carried out with the client in a chair.
A Bowen treatment lasts about 30-45 minutes. Most of the work can be done through light clothing and no oils are used during treatment. Many people can experience some pain relief after a single session, but two or three treatments are generally required to achieve a long-lasting relief. Even some long-term conditions may respond very quickly. The best outcome can be to try the Bowen Technique for three treatments, once per week, and ensuring that no other kind of bodywork is performed in between.
After the treatment you should abide by the following procedure. Go for a 15-20 minute walk, and do not sit for too long during the rest of the day. Get up about every thirty minutes or so and have a little walk around. Drink plenty of water (8 to 10 glasses) to flush the toxins out of your system. Try to avoid any heavy lifting or exercise. Do not use heat or ice packs, and do not have hot showers or a hot bath. Try to put your weight on both feet when you stand up when either getting out of bed, a chair or car.
The following week continue to walk for at least twenty minutes each day or else take two or three short walks. Conserve your energy for the purpose of healing your body. Also stick with drinking the 8 to 10 glasses of water each day to flush the system, as your body continues to heal during this next week. Be aware that any form of bodywork, even a simple backrub, can defeat the healing process. Remember you cannot use ice or heat packs, and do not have a hot shower or hot bath. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables to allow the body to recuperate and help reduce pain.
